When your air conditioner quits in a Las Vegas summer, the house heats up fast. You want to know what’s wrong, what it’ll take to fix it and when someone can get there.

Telling us exactly what you notice helps the technician start in the right place.

Warm air from the vents

The system runs, but the air coming out isn’t cool, or the house keeps getting warmer.

Weak airflow

Air barely moves at the vents, or some rooms get much less than others.

A new noise

Buzzing, grinding, rattling or squealing that wasn’t there before.

Water or ice

Water near the indoor unit, or ice on the refrigerant lines or coil.

It won’t start

Nothing happens when the thermostat calls for cooling, or it starts and shuts off quickly.

Higher bills, same comfort

Your system runs more than it used to without keeping the home any cooler.

Before you call

Two safe things to check

These are the only checks we recommend homeowners try. Anything beyond them belongs to a technician.

Don’t open electrical panels or the outdoor unit, handle refrigerant, chip away ice or keep resetting a tripped breaker.

  • Thermostat. Make sure it’s set to cool, the set temperature is below the room temperature, and the display is on. Replace batteries if it uses them.
  • Filter. If you can reach it safely, check the air filter. A clogged filter can restrict airflow; replace it with the correct size if it’s dirty.

When to stop and get help

If you see ice on the system and it doesn’t clear, turn the system off at the thermostat if it’s safe to do so and let a technician find the cause. Don’t chip or scrape ice—that can damage the coil or lines.

If you see smoke or smell electrical burning, turn the system off at the thermostat only if you can do it safely, leave the area and call 911 or the fire department if there’s any sign of fire. Don’t restart the system until it’s been checked.

If a breaker trips, don’t keep resetting it. A breaker that trips again is a sign something needs attention.
